Women’s Lacrosse Edges Coastal Carolina, 13-10

BALTIMORE, Md. – The UMBC women's lacrosse triumphed over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 13-10, on Wednesday night. The Retrievers move to 5-1 on the season, while the Chants fall to 1-3.

Coastal opened the game with a 2-0 lead after Madeline Bromley and Abbey Buchanan each scored in the first two minutes. UMBC answered back with two straight goals from senior Carolyn Jamison (Westminster, Md./Westminster), including one off a feed from classmate Taylor Oliver (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's).

The Chanticleers took a 3-2 lead after Haley Alexander scored off an assist from Courtney Genovese, but senior Caitlin Miller (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) would kick off a three-goal run for the Retrievers. Miller scored twice in the run and ended with a goal from junior Lauren McDonald (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) off a pass from classmate Payton Van Kirk (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) to give UMBC a 5-3 lead.

Coastal Carolina answered with two goals from Bromley and Genovese to knot the game at 5-5 heading into halftime.

Jamison kick-started a four-goal run for the Retrievers to open the second half, scoring her third of the day off a free position shot just 27 seconds into the period.  She followed it up with another goal before junior Sara Moeller (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) scored two straight to give UMBC a 9-5 lead.

The teams exchanged goals as the Retrievers took a 13-8 lead after a Van Kirk free position shot with 4:52 remaining in the game. The Chants scored twice off goals from Haley Kyger to close the gap to 13-10 towards the end of the period.

Jamison (4g), McDonald (3g,1a), and Moeller (3g,1a) led the Retrievers with four points, while Miller led the team with a game-high six draw controls.

In goal, senior Kelsey Major (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) made seven saves in the win. Coastal Carolina's Harley Barrett made 12 saves in 60 minutes of play.

The Retrievers will travel to Pittsburgh this weekend as they face Duquesne on Saturday, March 10. The opening draw is set for 12 p.m.
