BALTIMORE, Md. - The UMBC women's lacrosse will look to continue on a winning streak as the Retrievers welcome the VCU Rams on Saturday, Feb. 24. The opening draw is set for 12 p.m.
In a midweek matchup against Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday, Feb. 21, junior Sara Moeller scored a goal with 35 seconds remaining on the clock to help give UMBC a 9-8 victory. The Retrievers took an early 3-0 lead in the game and led 5-1 at the half. The Mountaineers battled back to tie things up at 8-8 with 2:03 remaining in the game. Moeller led the team with three goals, while senior Carolyn Jamison had two goals and two assists. Defender Kayla Renehan helped to pace the defense with three caused turnovers.  In goal, junior Carly Tolino has made 14 saves between both games and has a .560 save percentage.
VCU enters its third season under former UMBC standout Jen O'Brien. Last season, O'Brien led the Rams to a 7-10 overall record and a 3-6 record in A-10 play. In the first contest of the season, VCU dropped a close battle with Old Dominion, 11-9. The game was tied 5-5 at the half, but ODU controlled the pace for much of the second half. The Rams were able to bring the score to 9-8 at one point, but the Monarchs sealed the victory with two more goals. Against the Monarchs, junior Sofia Emond led the team with three points off three goals.
VCU returns a great deal of players from a season ago, including All-Atlantic 10 First Team honoree Sky Hyatt and All-Rookie Team selection Keriann McTavish.
This will be just the third meeting between the two teams, with UMBC holding a 2-0 advantage. Last season, the Retrievers defeated the Rams, 20-10, at Cary Street Field. In the game, Moeller set the school's single-game marks for most assists (9) and most points (13). Lauren McDonald paced the team with six goals, while Sam Nolan scored five on the day.
UMBC will travel to College Park on Wednesday, Feb. 28 as they face #1 Maryland. The opening draw is set for 7 p.m. The Retrievers return home on Saturday, March 3 as they welcome American for a 12 p.m. contest.
