Moeller’s Game-Winner Lifts Women's Lacrosse Over The Mount, 9-8

EMMITTSBURG, Md. – With 35 seconds on the clock, a goal from junior Sara Moeller (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) helped lift the UMBC women's lacrosse team to a 9-8 victory over the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers on Wednesday afternoon.

The Retrievers move to 2-0 on the season, while the Mountaineers fall to 1-1.

The Mount used a three-goal run late in the second half, including two man-down goals, to tie thing ups at 8-8. Junior Brittany Levine (Middletown, Md./Middletown) controlled the ensuing draw before senior Carolyn Jamison (Westminster, Md./Westminster) was awarded a free position shot. Her shot was saved by The Mount's Jillian Petito, but junior Lauren McDonald (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) was able to track down the ball and scoop it. After moving the ball around, it founds its way into Moeller's net, who was able to score from in front of the net to give UMBC the lead.

The Mountaineers won the last draw control of the contest, but the Retriever defense denied The Mount any chance to get a shot off as the clock ran out.

UMBC took an early 3-0 lead in the contest, as Jamison scored two goals in a 14 second period. Moeller added an additional score off a feed from Jamison at the 27:57 mark.  The Mount would tally its first goal of the game almost seven minutes later, after Alayna Pagnotta scored off an assist from Beanie Colson.

After the Mountaineers controlled the ensuing draw but turned it over, freshman Lily Kennedy (Mariottsville, Md./Marriots Ridge) scored her second goal in as many games off a free position shot to give the Retrievers a 4-1 lead at the 19:43 mark.

The game would continue on as a defensive battle for both teams as the sides were held scoreless for almost 14 minutes, until junior Payton Van Kirk (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) scored a man-up free positon goal at the 5:05 mark to take a 5-1 lead.

The first half would end with The Mount looking to clear the field, but Taylor Carhart turned it over with three seconds left and the clock ran out

The Retrievers scored 1:59 into the second half to extend their lead to 6-1, as Moeller once again scored off a feed from Jamison.

The Mount would see goals from Marley Heller, Carly Miller, and another Colson to Pagnotta score to close UMBC's lead to 6-4. Moeller would feed an assist to Kennedy to extend the lead back to three before the Mountaineer's Jannel Daufenbach scored off a feed from Zoe Hurlburt to push the score to 7-5.

The Retrievers saw another man-up, free position goal from Van Kirk at the 14:23 in the second half that extend UMBC's lead to 8-5 before The Mount's three-goal run began.

On the day, Moeller (3g,1a) and Jamison (2g,2a) led the team with four points. Junior defender Kayla Renehan (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) had three caused turnovers and three groundballs on defense. For The Mount, Miller led the team with two goals and one assist.

In goal, junior Carly Tolino (Middletown, Md./Middletown) made nine saves to pick up her second win of the season. For The Mount, Petito made 13 saves.

The Retrievers will return home to UMBC Stadium on Saturday, February 24 as they host the VCU Rams. The opening draw is set for 12 p.m.
