BALTIMORE, Md. - The UMBC women's lacrosse team will open up the 2018 season on Saturday, February 17 as they welcome the LIU Brooklyn Blackhawks to UMBC Stadium. The opening draw is set for 12 p.m. All the action will be streamed on AmericaEast.tv with Graham Whaples on the call.

Scouting the Retrievers

-Head coach Amy Slade enters her sixth season at the helm of the Retriever program. In the 2018 America East Preseason Coaches' Poll, UMBC was picked to finish third after picking up 39 votes and one first place vote. The Retrievers finished the 2017 campaign at 11-6 overall and a 4-2 record in America East play.

-Last season, the Retrievers saw the postseason for the third straight season under Slade's helm, the first time since 2010-12. In the quarterfinals of the America East Tournament, UMBC mounted a comeback bid against Albany but ultimately fell, 14-13.

-At the end of the season, Sara Moeller, Sam Nolan, Carolyn Jamison, Lauren McDonald, and Kayla Renehan were all named America East All-Conference. Nolan, Renehan and Jamison picked up First Team honors, while McDonald was named to Second Team and All-Academic. Moeller, a redshirt-freshman last season, was named to the All-Rookie Team.

-UMBC returns nine starters and 18 letterwinners from a season ago, including Moeller, McDoland, and Jamison who were among the team's top four scorers. Renehan, along with junior Jenna Baverman and senior Sarah Turco, return to anchor a back line that limited their opponents to 10 goals or less in 10 of its 17 games.

-Key losses for the Retrievers include Nolan, who left the program as the all-time assists leader with 73, and starting goalkeeper Ashley Peacock, who made 117 saves and had a .418 save percentage last season.

-UMBC will hit the road to face Mount St. Mary's for a midweek contest on February 21 before returning home to host VCU on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 12 p.m.

Scouting the Blackbirds

-LIU Brooklyn enters its sixth season under the direction of Allison Hanley. Last season, the Blackbirds finished 3-12 last season.

-This season, LIU Brooklyn returns 11 letterwinners to the field, including captains Sierra O'Connor, Carlie Robinson, Taylor O'Connor, and Dale Cosgrave. The Blackbirds also return starting goalkeeper Virginia Gibbons, who made 136 in net a season ago.

-Gone from the team for Hanley's squad are the top three offensive makers – Jenn Peters, Tori Shinkowitz, and Mary McQueen. Peters earned Second Team All-NEC Honors after scoring 51 points off 32 goals and 12 assists last year.

-The Blackbirds will take the rest of February off before hosting Radford on March 3. They then hit the road to face Siena, a common opponent for UMBC, on March 6.

Inside the Series

-This is just the second meeting between the Retrievers and the Blackbirds. The two last met in April 2003, when both were NEC Conference foes. UMBC walked away with a 20-4 victory.
