BOSTON, Mass. – The UMBC women's lacrosse team was selected third in the annual America East Preseason Coaches' Poll, the league announced Thursday.
The Retrievers, who finished 4-2 in conference play and made their third straight appearance in the America East Tournament for the first time since the 2010-12 season, garnered 39 votes and one first place vote. UMBC lost a close battle in the quarterfinals of the tournament to Albany, 14-13.
Stony Brook was the unanimous first place selection after winning its fifth-straight America East title last season. The Seawolves earned the seven other first place votes and 49 total votes. The Great Danes were picked to finish second with 41 votes after falling to the Seawolves in the America East Championship game, 14-12.
New Hampshire finished behind UMBC in fourth with 27 votes. The Wildcats finished the 2017 campaign with a 3-3 record and played in the tournament as the fourth seed, falling to Stony Brook, 20-3, in the opening round.
Binghamton and Vermont were tied at fifth with 22 points, while UMass Lowell (17) and newcomers Hartford (seven) rounded out the poll.
UMBC returns 18 letterwinners, including All-Conference honorees Sara Moeller (38 goals, 35 assists) and Lauren McDonald (62g, 6a), as well as senior Carolyn Jamison (39g, 22a). Juniors Kayla Renehan and Jenna Baverman also return to help anchor a UMBC defense that helped to limit their opponents to 10 goals or less in 10 of its 17 games. Senior Caitlin Miller returns after controlling 54 draws, the fifth in a season by any UMBC player.
The Retrievers will open their season on Saturday, February 17 as they host LIU Brooklyn at UMBC Stadium at 12 p.m. The team will open its America East slate on Saturday, March 24 when they host New Hampshire at 11 a.m. The America East Championships will take place May 4 & 6, with the highest seed scheduled to host the event.
