BALTIMORE – UMBC women's lacrosse outscored UMass Lowell, 11-0, in the opening half behind a combined nine points from sophomore Jennie Milligan (Crofton, Md./South River) and freshman Carolyn Jamison (Westminster, Md./Westminster) en route to the Retrievers scoring a season-high 19 goals to defeat the River Hawks, 19-2, in America East action on Senior Day at UMBC Stadium.
Jamison and Milligan finished with five points apiece, while rookie Marissa Davey (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) tallied with a game-high four goals to bring her total to 14 scores during America East play. Freshman Caitlin Miller (Frederick Md./Tuscarora) moved into third on UMBC's single-season draw list, pulling in eight draw controls on the day for a season-total of 67.The Retrievers win their second straight America East contest to improve to 3-1 in league play and 8-6 overall, while UMass Lowell falls to 0-13 overall and 0-4 in the league.
Jamison broke the scoreless game 8:18 into the contest, scoring in transition following a UMass Lowell turnover. The rookie dished off a pass to the streaking Davey less than two minutes later to put the Retrievers out in front, 2-0.
Davey got on the board a second time in the half on a free position goal into the bottom corner of the net with 16:52 remaining in the half. Jamison dished off a pass on a free position attempt for an easy finish from Milligan to give the Retrievers a 4-0 lead less than half way through the period.
Senior Abby Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) got in on the action, finishing on a pass from freshman Tianna Wallpher (Ellicott City, Md./Tuscarora) to extend UMBC's lead to 5-0. Milligan followed nearly two minutes later by coming around the back of the net and finishing high for her second goal of the game for the Retrievers' sixth straight.
UMBC scored five more in the final 7:23 of the period, starting will a shot high on goalkeeper Courtney Barrett on a free position attempt from Miller. Jamison scored her second of three goals on the day 1:23 later off a pass from Milligan and Davey followed by notching the hat trick just 1:04 after. Red-shirt sophomore Sam Nolan (Fallston, Md./Fallston) closed out the half with two straight goals, each coming off passes from Milligan.
UMBC held an 11-1 advantage in draw controls in the opening 30 minutes of play and outshot the River Hawks, 24-5, in the stanza.
The Retrievers wasted little time scoring in the second half, as Jamison tallied the hat trick on a pass from classmate Miller 24 seconds into the period. Davey and Wilson each added to their goal totals in the opening 10 minutes of the second half before freshman Taylor Sokol got the River Hawks on the board 12:23 into the stanza on her 10th goal of the year.
UMBC junior Kayley Jones (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) and freshman Kalyn Crocetti (Joppa, Md./Maryvale Preparatory), who each finished with two goals, scored their first goals of the season to give the Retrievers a 16-1 lead. UML's freshman Gabrielle Zorkers finished a pass from Sokol for her second goal of the year with 5:38 remaining, but UMBC responded with three more scores before the end of regulation, including Gabrielle Cardina's (Lititz, pa./Manheim Township) first collegiate goal.
UMBC goalkeeper Kelsey Major (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) finished with nine saves on the day to improve to 7-6 on the season, while Barrett (0-13) made 13 stops.
