Chelsea Barker Walsh was named an assistant coach on the UMBC women’s basketball coaching staff in May of 2015, after serving as the team’s Director of Women’s Basketball Operations for the 2014-15 season.

In her first season, the former Retriever guard was heavily involved with the team’s academics, community service and travel. Barker Walsh also introduced positive mental training to the team last season and will continue that in her second season with the program. She will also add on-court coaching and recruiting to her duties.

The Waterville, Maine, native was a four-year letterwinner with the Retrievers from 2007-2011. During her time with the program, UMBC earned an America East regular-season title and made its first-ever trip to the WNIT. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2011.

Barker Walsh was also a decorated high school player as well. She was a First Team All-Conference player in all four years at Messalonskee High School in Maine. Barker was selected as the women’s basketball Morning Sentinel Player of the Year in 2007 and was named a finalist for Miss Maine basketball.

Following her playing days with the Retrievers, Barker Walsh earned a Master’s of Education degree in counselor education from the University of Maine, where she served as the LGBT Coordinator and founded her own non-profit organization, Respect Differences. Barker Walsh has been serving as the organization’s CEO since its creation in January of 2013, where she has overseen fundraising efforts and provided leadership toward the achievement of the organization’s goals and objectives. 

Barker Walsh is the second former Retriever set to be on staff for the 2015-16 season, joining fourth-year assistant coach and former teammate Carlee Cassidy-Dewey. She currently resides in Baltimore with her wife, Kiera Barker Walsh.
