Summers and Oliver Post Double-Digits; Women's Basketball Drops 59-44 Decision to Kennesaw State

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) and Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) led the Retrievers with 31 combined points, but the UMBC women's basketball team fell to the Kennesaw State Owls, 59-44, at the Navy Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Owls move to 5-3 on the year while the Retrievers fall to 2-6.


UMBC opened the game on a 5-2 run with a three-pointer from Oliver and a layup from Lyric Swann (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach). Kennesaw State pulled ahead, 6-5, but UMBC used a 10-0 run at the end of the quarter, kickstarted by a layup from Summers and capped by a shot from Oliver to take a 15-6 advantage. The Retrievers shot 41.2 percent from the field in the first quarter, a stark comparison to the Owls' 17.6 percent .


Summers started the second quarter by converting a pair of free throws to put UMBC up, 17-6, before Kennesaw State hit two jumpers to cut the deficit to 17-10. The teams traded baskets, with Sariah Penese (Wellington, New Zealand) helping to put the Retrievers up by eight, 20-12, before the Owls cut the lead back down to six. Each team hit one free throw, with UMBC still holding a 21-15 lead before the Owls scored four points to cut the lead to two, 21-19. Summers hit a three as the shot clock expired with an assist from Dominika Skrocka (Moscow, Russia) to put the Retrievers up, 24-19 at halftime.


In the third quarter, Kennesaw State opened the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 26-24 lead before Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy) tied everything back up with a layup at the 6:04 mark. The Owls pushed their lead back to four, 30-26, but Summers hit two free throws to cut the deficit back down to two. Kennesaw State used an eight-point run to extend its lead to eight, 38-28, before Oliver hit a layup to end a two minute scoring drought for UMBC and cut the lead, 38-30. Oliver hit a three-pointer in the middle of Kennesaw State's seven-point end of the quarter run to make the score, 45-33 heading into the final 10 minutes.


The Owls opened the quarter by extending their lead to 15 before Costa hit a layup to make the score 48-35. Oliver scored five points to cut the lead down to 50-39, but the Owls scored five-straight to put them back up by 16. The Retrievers scored the final three points of the game off a free throw from Summers and a jumper from Swann but the Owls took the 59-44 victory.


Oliver led the Retrievers with 18 points, while Summers posted her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Jen Gast (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) was named to the All-Tournament team after putting up 15 points and 23 rebounds in the tournament.


Alexis Poole led all scorers with 21 points and 13 rebounds for the Owls, while Amani Johnson put up 15 points. 


The Retrievers will travel to Syracuse on Sunday, December 8 for a 2 p.m. tipoff with the Orange.
