Bangor, Maine-- UMBC women's basketball fell to the defending America East champions Maine on Saturday afternoon, 84-44. Junior Tyler Moore (Portsmouth, Va.) led the way with 11 points, as freshman Kayla Jackson (Rochester, N.Y.) added 10 points and six rebounds in the loss.
UMBC falls to 7-7, 0-1 AE while the Black Bears improve to 9-6, 2-0 AE.
The Black Bears came out of the gates on fire, ripping off a 7-0 run to start the game. Tyler Moore got the Retrievers on the board with a three from the wing a couple minutes in. However, Maine would continue their hot shooting, going 12-15 from the floor (80 percent) in the opening period to take a 31-8 lead, ending the first on an 18-0 run.
UMBC would continue their struggles from the floor in the second, as they went scoreless over a five minute stretch before Kayla Jackson hit a layup. She would rattle off six straight points to cut into the deficit. However, it would be Maine that held a 54-14 lead at the break.
Jackson led the way in the first half with six points. Moore and Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) each has three in the opening half.
UMBC comes outs of the break finding the offense. The Retrievers hold Maine scoreless over a 2:30 stretch to cut the deficit, forcing a Maine timeout. UMBC would go 5-9 from the floor in the third, as they trailed 72-29 after three.
The Retrievers would outscore the Black Bears, 15-12 in the fourth quarter, but Maine would defeat UMBC 84-44.
Moore led the Retrievers with 11 points with Jackson adding 10 points and a team best six rebounds. Summers chipped in nine points in the loss.
Parise Rossignol led all scorers with 19 points, going 5-6 from three. Kelly Fogarty also reached double figures for the Black Bears in the win with 14 points.
UMBC will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 9 when Hartford comes to town. Tip-off with the Hawks is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
