UMBC Women’s Basketball Returns to Action at Morgan State on Thursday

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC women's basketball returns from a week long hiatus to take on Morgan State on Thursday night. The Retrievers are in the midst of a five-game losing streak after starting the season 6-0. Last time out, the Retrievers dropped a 45-42 decision to Hofstra. UMBC had a shot to tie in the final moments, but the attempt was off the mark.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-The Retrievers enter the contest on a five-game losing streak after starting the year 6-0. Most recently, UMBC fell in a hard fought game against Hofstra, 45-42 on Dec. 9 at the Event Center. UMBC had a chance to tie it late, but the attempt just missed the mark as the buzzer sounded.

-Sophomore Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) leads the team offensively averaging 12.6 ppg. Summers is also the top rebounder for the Retrievers, pulling down 6.8 rebounds per game. Juniors Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) and Dominika Skrocka (Moscow, Russia) are averaging over 9.0 ppg at 9.6 and 9.2 ppg respectively. Skrocka leads the America East in three point shooting at 45.8 percent.

Scouting the Bears:

-Morgan State is riding a ten-game losing streak most recently falling to West Virginia on Tuesday night, 72-37. The Bears lone win came back on November 7 against Washington Adventist, 60-43 in Baltimore.

-Adre'onia Coleman is the lone Bear in double figures averaging 14.6 ppg as Morgan State is only scoring 46.2 ppg as a team. Coleman also leads the team with 7.0 rebounds per game. Ashia McCalla (7.8 ppg), Naomi Bolasingh (7.8 ppg) and Jihayah Chavis (7.3 ppg) are all averaging over 7.0 ppg.

All-Time Series:

-Morgan State and UMBC will face off for the 26th time with UMBC holding a slim 13-12 advantage in the series. The Bears have gotten the better of the Retrievers recently, winning three of the last four including the last time the two met in 2016.

-The Bears defeated the Retrievers 69-61 at the RAC in December. UMBC held a lead at halftime, but Morgan State ripped off a 24-11 third quarter to take the lead for good. Three Retrievers hit double figures led by Laura Castaldo with 22.

Conference Honors:

-Redshirt freshman O'lesheya Braxton was named America East Rookie of the Week on Nov. 26 for her efforts in the loss against Towson. Braxton had career highs in points (15), rebounds (10) and assists (5) for her first career double-double.

-Braxton joins Janee'a Summers and Paula Rubio (Madrid, Spain) who earned America East Player and Rookie of the Week awards earlier in the season.

Amongst the Nations Best:

-Dominika Skrocka ranks amongst the best in the country from beyond the arc. She is ranked 17th nationally in three point field goals made with 33. She is also ranked 36th in field goal percentage at 45.8 percent, tops in the America East.
