Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC women's basketball opens the month of December on the road against #7 Maryland at the Xfinity Center on Sunday. The Retrievers are coming off a 64-42 loss to American on Wednesday that saw sophomore Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) lead the way with 15 points. She has reached double figures in seven of eight games this year.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC comes into the matchup at 6-2, losing two straight to Towson and American. The Retrievers will be playing in just their third true road game of the year, and are 1-1 away from the UMBC Event Center this year. Last time out, Janee'a Summers led the way with 15 points in a 64-42 loss to American on Wednesday. It was the seventh time in eight games the sophomore has reached double figures.

-Summers paces the Retrievers on offense with 14.1 ppg, pulling down 6.8 rpg. She has reached double figures in seven of eight games this year shooting 40.2 percent from the floor. Junior Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) is second on the team averaging 9.4 ppg with Dominika Skrocka (Moscow, Russia) lead the team from deep with 22 three pointers (41.5 percent) and 8.5 ppg.

Scouting the Terrapins:

-Maryland comes into the Sunday matinee at a perfect 7-0 ranked 7th in the country. Most recently, the Terps defeated Georgia Tech in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge 67-54 on Thursday. Maryland held a 38-18 lead at halftime, but the Yellow Jackets stormed back using a 26-9 third quarter. However, it was not enough as Maryland outscored Georgia Tech 20-10 in the fourth for the win.

-Maryland has three players averaging double digits, led by Kaila Charles at 15.7 ppg. Taylor Mikesell (14.4 ppg) and Stephanie Jones (13.9 ppg) are also up over ten points per game. Shakira Austin leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 12.7 rpg with 9.1 ppg off the bench. The Terps are averaging 74.6 ppg, allowing just 49.6 ppg for a 25.0 ppg scoring margin.

All-Time Series:

-This will be the 13th meeting between the two schools with the Terps winning the previous 12 matchups. Ten of the first 12 meetings have been played at College Park with the Retrievers coming the closest to pulling off the upset in 2000 and 2001, each time falling by 12 points.

Conference Honors:

-Redshirt freshman O'lesheya Braxton was named America East Rookie of the Week on Nov. 26 for her efforts in the loss against Towson. Braxton had career highs in points (15), rebounds (10) and assists (5) for her first career double-double.

-Braxton joins Janee'a Summers and Paula Rubio (Madrid, Spain) who earned America East Player and Rookie of the Week awards earlier in the season.

Stern Approaching Milestone:

-UMBC bench boss Phil Stern is in his 17th season at the helm of the Retrievers and his 23rd season overall. Stern recorded win number 200 with UMBC against Notre Dame of Maryland. He now has 294 career wins, over 23 years of coaching.
