Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC women's basketball looks to return to their winning ways against American on Wednesday night. The Retrievers are coming off a 71-62 loss to Towson last Tuesday, the first loss of the season. Redshirt freshman O'lesheya Braxton (Paterson, N.J.) recorded her first career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC comes into the contest at 6-1, falling to cross-town rival Towson 71-62 last Tuesday night. The Retrievers battled back-and-forth with the Tigers, but Towson used a big fourth quarter to pull away from the Retrievers.

-Sophomore Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) leads the team averaging 14.0 ppg, grabbing 6.4 rpg. Junior Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) is the only other Retriever in double figures, scoring at a 10.4 ppg clip. The Retrievers are averaging 67.9 ppg, holding opponents to just 52.9 ppg.

Scouting the Eagles:

-The Eagles come into the game at 3-3 on the year, dropping their last two contests against Florida Gulf Coast and No. 8 Stanford. American defeated host Hawaii last Friday in their Thanksgiving tournament 69-57. The Eagles are 2-0 at home, but 1-3 away from Bender Arena.

-American has four players averaging double figures, led by Kaitlyn Marenyi with 15.0 ppg. She is also tied with Cecily Carl with 4.8 rpg. Elina Koskimies (14.7 ppg), Carl (12.3 ppg) and Kaitlyn Lewis (10.3 ppg) are also scoring in double figures this year. The Eagles are averaging 66.2 ppg, allowing opponents to score 70.7 ppg.

All-Time Series:

-This will be the 19th time the two sides are meeting with American leading the series 12-6. The Eagles and Retrievers have met every year since 2012, but the Eagles have won the last two meetings including a 61-48 victory last year.

-The Retrievers have won just two time in D.C., with the last win coming in 2005.

Conference Honors:

-Redshirt freshman O'lesheya Braxton was named America East Rookie of the Week on Monday for her efforts in the loss against Towson. Braxton had career highs in points (15), rebounds (10) and assists (5) for her first career double-double.

-Braxton joins Janee'a Summers and Paula Rubio (Madrid, Spain) who earned America East Player and Rookie of the Week awards earlier in the season.

Stern Approaching Milestone:

-UMBC bench boss Phil Stern is in his 17th season at the helm of the Retrievers and his 23rd season overall. Stern recorded win number 200 with UMBC on Friday against Notre Dame of Maryland. He now has 294 career wins, over 23 years of coaching.
