BOSTON, Mass. – After opening the season with a perfect record, sophomore Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) and freshman Paula Rubio (Madrid, Spain) have been named America East Player and Rookie of the Week for the week ending Nov. 11, the conference announced Monday.
At 4-0, the Retrievers are off to their best start since the 1985-86 season, where they also started with the same record.
Summers averaged 16.5 points, including a career-high 22 against Gettysburg in the season opener, and 6.5 rebounds during the week. The sophomore shot 44 percent (22-50) from the field and was 16-20 from the free throw line, to go along with 26 rebounds (10 off., 16 def.).
Summers also provided the go-ahead bucket in UMBC's 57-53 comeback victory against Kennesaw State on Sunday afternoon.
Rubio averaged 6.5 points, with a career-high 12 points against Gettysburg, and 2.0 assists during UMBC's perfect week. She was 12-24 (.500) from the field and had eight assists over the four game span; she also had 10 rebounds, three steals, and one block.
The Retrievers will travel to crosstown rivals Coppin State on Wednesday, Nov. 14 for an 11 a.m. contest.
