Hot Shooting Lifts UMBC Past UMass Lowell 61-39 in Regular Season Finale

Lowell, Mass.— UMBC shot 51 percent from the floor for the game as the Retrievers defeated the River Hawks, 61-39 in the regular season finale on Sunday. Seniors Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and Brittani Burgess (White Plains, Md./St. Mary's Ryken/VCU) had 13 and 12 points each.

UMBC ends the regular season at 4-25, 3-13 AE while the River Hawks end at 4-25, 1-15 AE.

Castaldo paced the Retrievers with 13 points, adding two assists on 5-6 shooting. Burgess stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Lakiah Sims (Riverdale, Ga./Charles Drew/Palm Beach State) led the team with 10 rebounds.

Oda Shackelford led the River Hawks with 15 points.

The Retrievers outrebounded UMass Lowell 36-28, shooting 51 percent from the floor. The Retrievers shot 71 percent in the first half.

UMass Lowell came out the gates with a three on the first possession, but that would be the last lead they would lead all half. UMBC surged ahead to a double figure lead thanks to a 17-2 run. Tyler Moore () capped the run with back-to-back triples. The Retriever offense was firing on all cylinders, as they took a 21-9 lead into the second.

The story was the same in the second as UMBC started the period 4-4 from the field. The Retrievers would go 6-8 from the floor in the second, including 3-3 from beyond the arc as they took a 38-16 lead into the break.

UMBC shot a scintillating 71.4 percent from the floor in the opening half, going 6-8 from three (75 percent). UMBC was led by Castaldo, who poured in 11 points on a perfect 4-4 (2-2 3FG) from the floor. The Retrievers held the River Hawks to just 23 percent shooting in the first half.

The Retrievers started the second half the way they left the first, putting together a 7-0 run to start. UMass Lowell would find their offense in the third, as they answered with six in a row to cut into the defcit. However, the Retrievers would have the answer as they led 51-28 heading into the fourth.

UMass Lowell would cut the Retriever lead in the fourth, outscoring the Retrievers 11-10. However, the Retrievers got four points from Kristen Teklits (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) in the final quarter to hold off the River Hawks 61-39 on Sunday.

The Retrievers and River Hawks will meet again in just three days at the UMBC Event Center for the America East Tournament First Round. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28 on ESPN3. Winner will be the eight seed and play the one seed Maine in the quarterfinals on Saturday, March 3.
