Baltimore, Md.— UMBC women's basketball fell to the visiting Stony Brook Seawolves, 69-44 on Wednesday in the final game at the RAC Arena. Senior guard Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) led the way with 18 points in the loss.
The Retrievers fall to 2-20, 1-8 AE while the Seawolves improve to 12-10, 4-5 AE on the year.
Shania Johnson led the Seawolves with 27 points, on 9-15 shooting, going 6-11 from three. Jerell Matthews was the only other Seawolf in double figures with 14 points.
Stony Brook set the tempo early in the first, using a 9-0 run to go ahead 13-4. They would hold UMBC scoreless for the remainder of the quarter, outscoring UMBC 15-2 to end the first up 15-4.
The Seawolves continued their torrid start leading by as many as 18 in the second. The Retriever offense woke up thanks to seven second quarter points by Laura Castaldo. The senior captain hit a tough and one layup, followed by a three and one to cut the deficit.
Freshman Janee'a Summers trimmed the Seawolves lead to just 13 at the half after her and one late in the half made it 30-17 at the break.
Castaldo led the Retrievers with seven points, as Summers and Jen Gast (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) chipped in three each. Shania Johnson led all scorers with 11 points on 4-7 shooting in the first 20 minutes.
Stony Brook continued their strong offensive showing, leading by as many as 25 early on and keep their lead around the 20-point mark for most of the quarter. UMBC would score 15 points in the quarter, trailing by 23 heading into the fourth.
UMBC opened the fourth on a 9-0 run with six points coming from Castaldo. Te'yJah Oliver capped the run with a corner three that cut the Stony Brook lead to 17. However, the Seawolves had an answer, scoring eight straight to push their lead back to 20. From there they would hold on to take a 69-44 victory on Wednesday.
The Retrievers open February with a road contest at Vermont on Saturday, Feb. 3. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. UMBC will have their Event Center opener against Binghamton on Thursday, Feb. 8. Tip-off with the Bearcats is slated for 7 p.m.
