Scouting the Retrievers:
-UMBC is coming off a 66-54 victory against UMass Lowell on Saturday, snapping a 13 game losing streak. Brittani Burgess led the way with a career best 16 points on 7-11 shooting to move UMBC to 2-15, 1-3 AE on the year.
-Senior guard Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) leads the Retriever offense that is averaging 51.9 ppg, by averaging 11.7 ppg. She is pulling down 3.7 rpg, shooting 31.3 percent from three. Sophomore Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) is scoring at an 8.4 ppg clip with freshman Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) leads the team at 6.0 rpg, averaging 7.6 ppg.
Scouting the Hawks:
-The Hawks are coming off a 64-59 defeat at the hands of Binghamton on Saturday. Darby Lee led Hartford with a team best 18 points and eight rebounds. She was one of two Hawks in double figures, as Mary Pattison added 13 points in the loss.
-Lindsey Abed leads the team averaging 12.8 ppg while dishing out a team best 3.9 assists per game for the Hawks, who average 65.6 ppg. Janelle Harrison is the team leader in rebounds, grabbing 6.1 per game, while averaging 11.3 ppg. Lee and Sierra DaCosta are both over ten points per game at 10.8 and 10.7 respectively.
-This will be the 33rd meeting in the all-time series between the Hawks and Retrievers with Hartford holding a 24-8 advantage in the series.
-Last year Hartford won the season series 2-1, with each team winning on the road, and Hartford knocking UMBC out of the America East Tournament in Portland, Maine 74-40 in March.
-Laura Castaldo is quickly approaching the top ten in three different categories. She is only four games played and 21 starts from reaching the top ten in program history. She is 29 three pointers away from 150 for her career, while needing 141 points to reach 1,000. Castaldo reached the top ten in minutes played against UMass Lowell on Saturday.
-Head coach Phil Stern can also reach some milestones in 2017-18. He needs 15 wins for 300 in his career and nine for 200 at UMBC.
-UMBC will have the week off before hosting defending America East Champion Albany on Sunday, Jan. 21. Tip-off with the Great Danes at the RAC is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN 3.
