Oliver Scores Ten; UMBC Falls at George Mason on Monday Night, 58-38

Fairfax, Va.— UMBC women's basketball was led by sophomore guard Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) with ten points, however the Retrievers fell to the Patriots 58-38 on Monday. UMBC drops their eighth straight to fall to 1-10 on the year.

The Retrievers would strike first off a beautiful backdoor cut by Brittani Burgess (White Plains, Md./St. Mary's Ryken/VCU) to score the game's first points. George Mason answered with an 11-0 run, going 3-6 from three during that stretch to take an 11-2 lead early on.

Te'yJah Oliver put an end to the run with an and one to cut into the deficit. However, the Patriots would end the quarter on an 8-1 run to take a 19-6 lead after the first ten minutes.

The UMBC offense would come to life in the second as the Retrievers went on a mini spurt to cut the Patriot lead to just eight after a Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) layup and trifecta. Classmate Kristen Teklits (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) would drain a three from the wing, followed by an Oliver mid-range jumper to cut it to seven, but a Patriot three at the end of the half gave them a 33-23 lead at the break.

Oliver led the Retrievers with seven points with Summers adding six in the first 20 minutes. UMBC shot 34.6 percent from the floor in the half, as the Patriots hit five triples, scoring 14 points in the paint.

George Mason would push their lead to 15 right out of the halftime break, holding UMBC scoreless for six minutes after Burgess scored the opening points of the half.

UMBC would answer late in the quarter, as Tyler Moore (Portsmouth, Va./Norfolk Academy) finished a tough layup in the paint, followed by a driving Oliver layup to cut the lead to just 11. George Mason would answer with a 4-0 run to end the quarter up 45-30.

The Patriots would hold off the Retrievers in the fourth thanks to an 8-0 run late to take a 58-38 victory on Monday night.

Oliver led the Retrievers with ten points and four assists, while Teklits added nine points. Summers pumped in six points and nine rebounds in the loss.

Natalie Butler led the Patriots with 16 points and 13 rebounds in the win.

UMBC will have a ten-day hiatus before returning to the hardwood on Thursday, Dec. 21 at Maryland Eastern Shore. Tip-off with the Hawks is set for 6 p.m.



-Sophomore Tyler Moore played in her first game of the 2017-18 season after suffering a knee injury in preseason. She had five points in her season debut.

-Freshman Kristen Teklits made her first career start, scoring nine points on 3-8 shooting from three.
