UMBC Women’s Basketball Unveils 2017-18 Schedule

2017-18 Schedule

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC women's basketball announced their 29-game schedule for the 2017-18 season on Tuesday. The Retrievers will play 13 games at home with a total of 21 games being broadcast on ESPN3.

UMBC opens the season with a weekend trip to Fordham (Nov. 10) and Hofstra (Nov. 12) before coming home to take on Division III foe Gettysburg (Nov. 14) and LIU Brooklyn (Nov. 17). The Retrievers will then head up the beltway to take on Towson on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

The Retrievers will take part in a four-team tournament the weekend after Thanksgiving at Navy. UMBC takes on St. Bonaventure on Nov. 25 and will face either host Navy or North Dakota State the next day. The month of November closes with UMBC entertaining American on Wednesday, Nov. 29.

December opens with the Black and Gold hosting Columbia (Dec. 3) and Denver (Dec. 7), before the team heads down to George Mason on December 11. The Retrievers will have a ten-day break before closing out the non-conference slate at Maryland Eastern Shore on Dec. 21 and Princeton on Dec. 30.

Coach Stern knows that his non-conference schedule will help his young team prepare for the America East slate with 11 of the team's 16 members being underclassmen. "This is a really competitive non-conference schedule. Playing three A10 schools, two CAA schools [and] Princeton plus our local rivals should really get us ready for America East play," Stern said.

The America East slate opens after the new year up in Durham, N.H. on Jan. 3. The Retrievers then open a three-game home stand against Vermont (Jan. 6), Maine (Jan. 10) and UMass Lowell (Jan. 13). The team will head to Hartford two days later, before coming home to take on Albany on Jan. 21.

The month of January ends with a pair of road contests at Binghamton and Maine on the 24th and 28th before UMBC hosts Stony Brook on Jan. 31.

February opens with the Retrievers heading to Vermont on the 3rd, before welcoming Binghamton (Feb. 8) and New Hampshire (Feb. 11) to Baltimore. The Black and Gold then head to Stony Brook and Albany on Feb. 14 and Feb. 17, before hosting Hartford on Senior Day on Feb. 22. The regular season comes to a close at UMass Lowell on Sunday, Feb. 25.

"As usual the conference will be competitive every night. You have to hold serve at home and pull off a couple tough road wins to position yourself in the top third like we did last year," Stern said of the America East.

The America East Championships will once again be held at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine with the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds on March 3-4. The championships will be played at the highest remaining seed on March 10 on ESPNU. With UMass Lowell being eligible for postseason play, there will be a first round play-in game between the eight and nine seeds at the eight seed on February 28.
