BOSTON – UMBC women's basketball junior Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and freshman Allison McGrath (South Park, Pa./South Park) have been named America East Co-Player and Rookie of the Week for the week ending Feb. 20, the conference announced on Monday. Castaldo shared her weekly honor with Binghamton's Alyssa James and was also named College Sport Madness's Women's Basketball America East Player of the Week.
In a stellar 2-0 week for the Retrievers, Castaldo led the team as she averaged 20.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.0 steal and 1.0 assist per contest. The junior was 15-25 (.600) from the field, 3-3 from three-point range, and 7-8 from the free throw line.
In a pivotal 60-63 win over Albany, Castaldo netted 16 points off 5-8 shooting from the field, including going 1-1 from long distance and 5-6 from the charity stripe. The junior also added seven rebounds and two assists.
Against UMass Lowell, Castaldo reset her career highs and recorded her first double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Castaldo was 10-17 from the field, 2-2 from the three point range, and 2-2 from the charity stripe.
McGrath averaged 7.5 points, 1.0 blocks and 4.0 rebounds per game. The freshman was 5-19 from the field, with all of her baskets being three-pointers. Against Albany, McGrath was 1-9 from the floor, but her impact came on the defensive side with two blocks, including one with eight seconds left to keep the Great Danes from attempting a game-tying basket. At UMass Lowell, McGrath netted 12 points and pulled down six boards in the win for UMBC. McGrath was 4-8 from three point range and also added a takeaway.
UMBC is on a six game winning streak, which is tied for second longest in program history. In 2010-11, Phil Stern's squad won seven straight, while last year's team won six in a row as well.
