BALTIMORE, Md. – Prior to the start of the 2016-17 season, the UMBC women's basketball team has received votes in College Insider's Mid-Major Top 25 poll.
The Retrievers, who return nine letterwinners and six starters from a season before, received three votes in the poll and have not been ranked since 2011, when the team was slotted at number 21 after winning the America East regular season championship.
UMBC was also picked second in the America East preseason coaches' poll, which is the second-highest ranking in head coach Phil Stern's era behind the team's number one ranking in 2011-12.
After making it to the Round of 32 in the Women's NCAA Tournament in 2016, South Dakota State came in first in the poll, receiving 26 of the first-place votes. Albany is the only America East team currently ranked at ninth, while Maine is receiving 42 votes.
The Mid-Major Poll is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast, Western Athletic.
UMBC will open its season on Friday, Nov. 11 when they travel to the Big Apple to face Columbia at 2 p.m.
