Vestal, N.Y.— UMBC women's basketball saw their four game win streak end at the hands of Binghamton, 70-56 on Wednesday night. The Retrievers got 21 points from junior Pandora Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) in the loss, as UMBC falls to 17-11, 8-7 AE on the year.
Binghamton dominated play in the opening stanza. The Bearcats went 5-5 from deep in the first, with all five coming from Imani Watkins. BU went on an 11-0 run early, but Pandora Wilson was there to quell the run, scoring eight points in the opening quarter, as Binghamton lead 23-14 after the period.
The Retrievers would answer the bell in the second quarter, coming out strong to start. UMBC would get a lay-up from Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) to cut the Binghamton lead to 25-24, before another lay-up from the junior would give UMBC the lead, thanks to a 10-0 run. The Bearcats would respond, cutting the lead to 32-31 at the break.
Wilson scored 16 points in the opening two quarters. UMBC shot 39 percent from the field, while the Bearcats rode their hot three point shooting, going 5-8 in the opening half.
Coming out of the locker rooms, neither side could get anything going in the early going. The Bearcats went on an 8-0 spurt early in the quarter, taking a 39-34 lead, and would go on another 6-0 run late to grab a seven point lead. UMBC would answer with an Amanda Hagaman (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) lay-up, but Watkins hit a deep three at the buzzer to give Binghamton their largest lead of the game, 52-44.
The Bearcats continued where they left off in the third, increasing their lead to as many as 11 early on. The Retrievers would attempt to cut into the lead, but each time the Bearcats had the answer. UMBC would get the deficit down to six with two minutes to go, but Binghamton got back to back lay-ups from Rebecca Carmody to extend their lead to 68-56. Binghamton would hold on the rest of the way, winning 70-56.
Wilson led the way with 21 points and ten rebounds. McCarley finishes with 18 points on 5-11 shooting. The Retrievers got 32 points in the paint, but allowed the Bearcats to shoot 47 percent in the second half in the loss.
UMBC returns home in the regular season finale on Sunday, Feb. 28 against New Hampshire at 1 p.m. The Retrievers will honor their two seniors, Capree Garner (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) and Liz McNaughton (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) prior to the game.
