Stern Completes 2015-16 UMBC Women’s Basketball Roster With Two Additions

BALTIMORE – UMBC Women's Basketball Head Coach Phil Stern made two additions to the Retrievers' squad with the addition of Grace Doane (Roanoke, Va./William Fleming) and transfer Brittani Burgess (White Plains, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) to the 2015-16 roster.

Doane and William Fleming enjoyed a successful 2014-15 campaign, reaching the VHSL Group 4A semifinals under head coach Champ Hubbard. Doane, a McDonalds All-American nominee, earned All-Group 4A First Team and All-Timesland Second Team recognition during her senior season after averaging 12.2 points per game as the Colonels' three-point sharp-shooter.

Doane, a 1,000-point scorer, competed with William Fleming for the past three seasons, with the Colonels reaching the state tournament in each of the last two campaigns, including a state finals appearance in 2014. Over her final two seasons, Doane was a two-time All-Region, All-District and All-Conference First Team honoree.

"Gracie is an important late find for our program," said Stern. "She is a big guard who can stretch the defense with her tremendous three-point range. She comes from a winning high school program and I look forward to watching her develop over the next four years."

Burgess, who will sit out the 2015-16 campaign due to NCAA transfer rules, joins the Retrievers after two seasons at VCU. The 5-11 guard was a part of the Rams' 2013-14 team that made a trip to the WNIT. Burgess competed in 35 games over her two seasons with the Rams, including 25 appearances during the 2014-15 campaign. The White Plains, Md., native was a First Team All-Conference player in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference during her high school tenure at St. Mary's Ryken.

"Brittani is a tremendous athlete and has her best basketball ahead of her," Stern said. "I look forward to working with her in her red-shirt year before she makes a huge impact in 2016-17 for the black and gold!"

Doane and Burgess are the third and fourth additions to the squad, along with Chukwuma Chiamaka (Lagos, Nigeria/Eastern Arizona College) and Michaela Gelbaugh (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) that are set to join the program for the 2015-16 campaign.
