BALTIMORE – UMBC Women's Basketball Head Coach Phil Stern has announced the promotion of Chelsea Barker to assistant coach for the 2015-16 campaign. Barker served as the program's Director of Basketball Operations this past season.
"I'm so proud to be able to promote Chelsea to assistant coach," said Stern. "She proved invaluable as our DOBO and she has shown the same work ethic and attention to detail that she did when she was a player for me. She will continue to impact our student-athletes from her new position."
Barker, who was heavily involved with the team's academics, community service and travel during the 2014-15 campaign, will add recruiting and on-court coaching to her duties. Barker will also continue her positive mental training, which she began with the program upon her hiring in August of 2014.
"I'm very excited for my new role as assistant coach for the women's basketball program," said Barker. "I look forward to helping with more on-court aspects of the game and I'm thrilled to continue to help our players reach their maximum potential by facilitating mental toughness training."
Barker is a former guard with the Retrievers (2007-11). She captained the Retrievers' 2011 team that earned an America East regular-season title and made its first-ever trip to the WNIT. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology from UMBC in 2011 and later went on to earn a Master's of Education degree in counselor education from the University of Maine.
