Women’s Basketball Looks for Season Sweep of Vermont on Play 4Kay Day at the RAC

BALTIMORE – UMBC women's basketball looks for a season sweep of Vermont on Saturday, Feb. 14 in the Retrievers' annual Play 4Kay contest. Tip is set for 1 p.m. inside the RAC Arena. All the live action will be available free of charge at UMBCRetrievers.tv, courtesy of the America East digital network.

Scouting the Retrievers (8-16, 3-8 AE):

-After registering 69 points-or-more in three straight games, UMBC dropped a tough contest to Stony Brook on Wednesday, 74-41. Sophomore guard Taylor McCarley registered her fourth straight game in double-digit points, leading the Retrievers in points (14), rebounds (six) and assists (five) for the second straight game.

-McCarley is shooting 51.2 percent from the field over the last four games and has averaged 20.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game during the span. On the year, the second-year guard is contributing 10.5 points and a team-best 3.5 assists per contest.

-Junior guard Capree Garner has registered double-digit points in 22 of 24 games on the season and was the first Retriever since 2011 to record 30 points in a game. Garner ranks second in the league with eight 20-point performances and is averaging 18.0 points per game, second in the conference. Garner also leads the squad in rebounding (5.3 rpg) and steals (2.0 spg).

Scouting the Catamounts (5-19, 2-10 AE):

-Vermont has won two straight coming in to Saturday's contest. The Catamounts are coming off a three-point victory, 63-60, versus New Hampshire on Wednesday, behind 13 points apiece from senior forward Kayla Burchill and freshman guard Katie Lavelle.

-Freshman guard Sydney Smith paces the squad, that is averaging 63.0 points per game, at 13.0 points per game. She is chipping in 4.1 rebounds and a team-best 1.2 blocks per game. Sophomore guard Kylie Butler and senior forward Niki Taylor are each chipping in nine points per game, with Taylor ranking second in the league at 8.5 rebounds per contest.

On the Horizon for the Retrievers

-UMBC hits the road for an ESPN3 matchup at Albany on Wednesday, Feb. 18.  

Inside the Series

-Vermont holds a 14-11 lead in the all-time series, but the Retrievers have won three of the last five games, including two straight.  

Headlines From the First Matchup

-UMBC's Capree Garner and Taylor McCarley combined for 39 points, 14 rebounds, nine steals and seven assists to help the Retrievers snap a six-game skid and earn their first America East victory of the season in a 68-61 win against Vermont at Patrick Gymnasium.
