INDIANAPOLIS – UMBC women's basketball sophomore forward Pandora Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) has been named a nominee for the Allstate WBCA and NABC Good Works Team, as announced by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association on Wednesday.
The WBCA and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) named 251 nominees for this year's Good Works Team, an award that recognizes a distinguished group of student-athletes who have demonstrated a commitment to enriching the lives of others and contributing to the greater good in their communities.
The UMBC women's basketball program has proven itself to be a team that makes it a priority to give back to the community and Wilson has taken that idea and ran with it since joining the program last winter. Wilson, one of three captains for the Retrievers for the 2014-15 campaign, helped to organize and lead multiple community service efforts throughout the team's summer and fall schedules. During that time, Wilson and the Retrievers have found a variety of ways to become engaged in the community, from writing letters to members of the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, to making visits to the Department of Juvenile Services and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
"Pandora has stood out to me as someone who genuinely cares about giving back," UMBC Director of Basketball Operations and the team's community service coordinator Chelsea Barker. "She wants to help others in the local community and she views all of our community service events as opportunities to make a positive influence on everyone involved."
From the 93 WBCA nominees and the 158 NABC nominees, voting panels will select two 10-member teams comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA Division I level and five student-athletes from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The final roster of 20 award recipients will be unveiled in February.
