Women’s Basketball Picked to Finish Sixth in AEC

America East Release

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC women's basketball has been picked to finish sixth in the America East's annual coaches' preseason poll, as announced by the league office on Wednesday. Voting was conducted by the conference's nine head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own teams.

The Retrievers received 24 votes after earning the seventh seed with the league's youngest roster in last year's America East Championships. UMBC returns three starters and seven letterwinners, including America East All-Rookie Team honoree Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross). This season, 13th-year head coach Phil Stern brings in nine newcomers that are primed to make an immediate impact on the Retrievers and in the America East.

The defending league champion Albany Great Danes were picked as the preseason favorites, earning eight of the nine first-place nods and 64 points overall. After making a trip to the America East championship game last season, the Stony Brook Seawolves received 51 votes to come in second place.

New Hampshire is coming off back-to-back America East semifinal appearances and earned the final first-place vote to tie for third with Hartford at 46 votes. Maine came in just three votes behind the Wildcats and Hawks for fifth place. Following the Retrievers in sixth place was UMass Lowell and Vermont with 21 votes apiece and rounding out the poll was Binghamton with eight votes.

UMBC opens the 2014-15 slate with five straight home games, beginning with a matchup against Division III Eastern on Nov. 14 at the RAC Arena. The Retrievers get underway in America East on the road at UMass Lowell on Thursday, Jan. 8.

The quarterfinals and the semifinals of the America East Championships are set to be hosted by Binghamton on March 7-8, following by the championship contest on March 13, hosted by the highest remaining seed.
