BALTIMORE – UMBC Women's Basketball Head Coach Phil Stern has announced the Retrievers' 29-game 2014-15 schedule.
"We are very excited to renew so many of our local rivalries," said Stern. "These games are always great for local women's basketball."
The Retrievers open the 2014-15 slate with five straight home games in the month of November, including three within the first week of the season. UMBC gets started against Division III Eastern on Nov. 14, followed by a battle with local-rival Loyola (Md.) on Sunday, Nov. 16. A midweek matchup with Coppin State on Wednesday, Nov. 19 concludes a hectic first-week for the black and gold.
Prior to the Thanksgiving break, the Retrievers host Robert Morris on Nov. 23 and open a UMBC basketball double-header against Towson on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
UMBC women's basketball hits the road for the entire month of December, starting with a trip to the nation's capital on Wednesday, Dec. 3 to take on American. The Retriever rookies will get their first taste of life on the road when UMBC high-tails it up to New York, N.Y. to take on Columbia. Before preparing for finals, the Retrievers visit Lewisburg, Pa. for a battle with Bucknell.
At the conclusion of the first semester, UMBC travels to Rider (Dec. 18) and UMES (Dec. 22), before finishing the year in Philadelphia where the Retrievers will tango with Penn (Dec. 29) and La Salle (Dec. 30).
Following a meeting with Morgan State on the first of the year, the Retrievers will have a bye on the opening weekend of the America East schedule. UMBC gets underway in league action with a road-trip against the league's newest member, UMass Lowell (Jan. 8), followed by a matchup at New Hampshire on Jan. 10.
The Dawgs return home for just the second time in 11 games on Jan. 14 when they host Stony Brook in a rematch of last season's America East quarterfinal matchup. The Retrievers jump back on the road taking on Vermont on Jan. 17 and meeting Hartford for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day match-up on Jan. 19.
UMBC returns to the confines of the RAC Arena for four of its next five games, starting on Jan. 22 when it hosts defending league champion Albany. Stern's squad welcomes Maine on Jan. 25 before closing out the first half of the conference slate at Binghamton on Jan. 28.
UMBC follows-up its bye week with home contests against the River Hawks (Feb. 4) and Wildcats (Feb. 7). The Retrievers hit the road in mid-week clashes against Stony Brook (Feb. 11), Albany (Feb. 18) and Maine (Feb. 26) during the final stretch of the regular-season. The Dawgs will challenge Vermont (Feb. 14) and Hartford (Feb. 22) on their home court and conclude the campaign with Senior Day on Sunday, March 1 versus Binghamton.
"The America East race should be an interesting one as we have three new coaches in the conference," explained Stern. "Albany has been dominant the last couple of years, so the question will be, can anyone knock them off?"
The quarterfinals and the semifinals of the America East Championships are set to be hosted by Binghamton on March 7-8, following by the championship contest on March 13, hosted by the highest remaining seed.
