LOWELL, Mass. – UMBC women's basketball's freshman forward Sara Tarbert (Delta, Pa./Kennard-Dale) notched her fourth double-double of the season, but UMass Lowell tabbed a 16-2 run over the final 5:09 to pick up the 59-51 victory in America East action on Saturday afternoon at Costello Athletic Center.
UMBC led by as many as 17 in the first half of the contest and held an advantage for over 33 minutes of action, but 25 turnovers, including 15 in the second half, coupled with the Retrievers shooting 25 percent in the final 20 minutes, allowed UMass Lowell back into the contest. The River Hawks knocked down 10 three-point field goals on the afternoon with five coming off the bench from freshman guard Nicole Hayner en route to her game-high 17 points.
The Retrievers finished with three double-digit scorers, including a team-best 13 points from freshman guard Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross). Sophomore center Bridget O'Donnell (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds, while Tarbert added 10 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sophomore guard Liz McNaughton (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) matched a career-high with nine rebounds and added six points and three assists.
The River Hawks improve to 4-18 on the year and 3-8 in the league play, while UMBC falls to 2-21 overall and 1-10 in the conference.
UMass Lowell opened up with the first bucket of the contest, but UMBC went on to score the next 11 points to jump out to an 11-2 advantage. The Retrievers led by as many as 17 points in the opening half, following a steal and lay in for Tarbert, but UMBC did not score again over the final 2:02 of the period, allowing the River Hawks to finish the half on a 10-0 run, to cut its deficit to seven, 34-27, at the break.
The Retrievers shot 56.5 percent from the floor in the opening period, but turned the ball over 10 times in the frame. UMBC held an 18-4 advantage in the paint and assisted 12 of its 13 baskets in the half. Junior guard Jasmine McRoy led the charge for the River Hawks, finishing the half with 10 of her 16 points.
UMass Lowell continued where it ended the first half, opening with a short jumper from sophomore forward Lindsey Doucette, followed by a trey from Hayner to come within two, 34-32, but Tarbert and O'Donnell helped the Retrievers to maintain their advantage, 36-32, with 18:02 to go.
UMBC held off a second push from the River Hawks by going on a quick 5-0 run behind freshmen Emily Russo (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) and Amanda Hagaman (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) to take an eight-point lead, 45-37, with 10:37 to go, but the Retrievers would score just six points over the final 10 minutes, all coming from McCarley.
UML took its first lead since 17:03 of the first half following four straight points from Doucette with 3:04 remaining in the contest. Despite not having scored in 3:23, McCarley's layup with 1:58 to go in the contest brought UMBC back within two, 53-51, however, UMass Lowell connected on three sets of free throws over the final 1:35 to hang on for the victory.
The Retrievers held a 32-12 advantage at points in the paint, but hit 2-of-13 from beyond the arc and 7-of-28 from the field in the second period.
UMBC returns home for three straight games, starting with a matchup against the league's first-place team Albany on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
-UMass Lowell completes the season-sweep to take a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series.
-Sara Tarbert reached double-figures for the seventh straight game. She notched a double-double for the fourth time this season and double-digit rebounds for the fourth time.
