CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – For the second time this season, freshman Lauren Chase (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist) has been named America East Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Playing in her first America East games, Chase opened her conference career averaging 6.0 points, 5.7 assists and 3.0 steals as the Retrievers went 2-1, picking up wins against New Hampshire and Maine.
In the conference opener last Monday, Chase filled up the statsheet registering nine points, five rebounds, seven assists and four steals to lead UMBC to a comeback victory over UNH, 67-65.
Not to be outdone, Chase rebounded from a tough outing at Albany to guide the Retrievers past the Black Bears on Saturday afternoon on the road, winning 75-55 in Orono. The freshman notched seven points, four steals and another seven assists to lead the Retrievers to their first win on the road since winning at Navy on Dec. 20.
Through the first round of league play, Chase leads the America East with 3.9 assists per game and is tied for fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio standing at 1.0.
Chase was also named America East Rookie of the Week back in November following UMBC's season-opening wins over Morgan State and Monmouth.
The Retrievers return to action on Thursday when they host Stony Brook at the RAC. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
