CAMBRIDE, MASS. – UMBC women's basketball freshman Lauren Chase (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist) was named the America East Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season, the conference office announced on Monday. Chase won the award for the first time back on Nov. 14, before winning it in back-to-back weeks in early January.
Chase continues to have a strong rookie campaign against tough America East opposition. Last week against Binghamton and Hartford, the freshman averaged 15.5 points, 4.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds while shooting 41.7 percent from the field.
In a home win over Binghamton last Wednesday, Chase scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half to lead the Retrievers back from a halftime deficit.
On Sunday, in front of a national television audience at Hartford, Chase led UMBC with a team-high 15 points, while also registering three assists.
For the season, the freshman leads the America East in assists, with 4.7 assists per game and ranks second with a 1.2 assists-to-turnover ratio. In addition, she averages the most minutes per game for any freshman in the league, playing 33.0 minutes per game.
Chase and the Retrievers return to the court on Wednesday, when they travel to Massachusetts to take on Boston University. Tip-off at Case Gymnasium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
