, Mass.—The UMBC women's basketball team (14-15, 6-10 AEC) earned the fifth seed in this weekend's America East Championships and will take on fourth-seeded Binghamton (13-16, 8-8 AEC) in the league quarterfinals Friday after 12 p.m. at Hartford's Chase Arena.
The Retrievers tie their highest finish ever since joining the America East in 2003-04. UMBC also placed fifth in 2006 and took on Binghamton in the quarterfinals that year, as well. The Bearcats won that matchup, 72-66, in overtime.
This marks the fifth straight season Binghamton will play in the four-five game.
The Retrievers and Bearcats split the 2009 season series, with each team winning at home. UMBC took a 78-63 decision at the RAC Arena on Jan. 24, while Binghamton won at the Events Center, 70-50, on Feb. 28.
UMBC is coming off a 73-65 loss to league champion Boston University on March 4.
Boston University claimed the top seed in the tournament after completing the fifth undefeated season in conference history. The Terriers will take on the winner of Thursday evening's first-round game between No. 8 Albany and No. 9 Maine. The winner of that quarterfinals matchup will take on the winner of the UMBC/Binghamton game on Saturday at 4 p.m.
The first-round game and all four quarterfinals contests will be available live on www.AmericaEast.com via live streaming in conjunction with Pack Network and JumpTV. The semifinals and the title game will air on America East Television.
