, Mass.—UMBC freshman guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) was named America East Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week for the third week in a row, the conference announced Monday. The award covers all games from Dec. 15-21.
In two games last week, Kurowski averaged 11 points, five rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. She netted 13 points against James Madison on Dec. 18, including 12 in the second half, and added five rebounds, an assist and a steal. Then against Loyola on Dec. 21, the rookie tallied nine points while also contributing five rebounds and a career-high four steals.
Kurowski is averaging 16.3 ppg on the season, second-best on the team and in the league.
Kurowski is the first America East freshman to win three straight Rookie of the Week awards since Vermont's Courtnay Pilypaitis did it five weeks in a row from Dec. 24, 2006-Jan. 22, 2007.
UMBC freshmen have now won five straight Rookie of the Week awards and six of the last seven dating to last season. Guard Katie Brooks earned the honor for weeks two and three, while forward Meghan Colabella was selected in each of the last two weeks of the 2007-08 campaign. Kurowski and Colabella are the only Retrievers ever to be named the top rookie three times.
