Women’s Basketball Announces 2008-09 Non-Conference Schedule

BALTIMORE—UMBC head women's basketball coach Phil Stern today announced his squad's 2008-09 non-conference schedule, highlighted by games against tough in-state and regional rivals, as well as three tournaments. The Retrievers could face up to four teams in the first half of their schedule that advanced to postseason play in 2007-08. UMBC will open the season at national power George Washington on Saturday, Nov. 15.

"We once again look forward to challenging ourselves," Stern said. "Our non-conference schedule will be a great chance for our young players to get acclimated to the rigors of the college game."

George Washington, ranked No. 14 in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, earned its fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth last season and advanced to the Sweet 16. The Retrievers open the season against the Colonials for the third year in a row and the second time at the Charles E. Smith Center in Washington, D.C.

UMBC hosts George Mason on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. in the home opener at the RAC Arena, the Retrievers' only home game in November, as they close out the month with a pair of weekend tournaments.

UMBC will play at Seton Hall's tournament Nov. 21-22, facing Northern Illinois on the first day of competition and either former Northeast Conference foe Wagner or the host Pirates on day two. A week later (Nov. 29-30), the Retrievers will participate in the Iona Classic, along with Western Michigan and Maryland-Eastern Shore.

The Retrievers host four in-state rivals in December, including three in a row to start the month, as Navy (Dec. 3), Towson (Dec. 6) and Coppin State (Dec. 8) visit the RAC. After a trip to James Madison on Dec. 18, UMBC returns home to host Loyola on Dec. 21.

UMBC concludes its non-conference schedule at the University of Virginia's tournament at the end of December. The Retrievers will face Louisiana Tech on Sunday, Dec. 28, and either Rider or the host Cavaliers on Monday, Dec. 29.

The America East portion of UMBC's schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
