, Mass.—UMBC freshman forward Erin Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) was named America East Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. The award covers all games from Dec. 22-29.
Brown averaged 14.0 points and 5.0 rebounds, tying for the team lead in both categories, while shooting a team-best 52.2 percent (12-for-23) from the floor in two games at the Marriott Cavalier Classic hosted by the University of Virginia.
Brown scored a team-high 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 2-for-4 from long distance, while adding four rebounds and two steals against Louisiana Tech on Sunday. She then tallied 13 points to go along with six rebounds, a block and two assists in the Retrievers' win over Rider on Monday.
Brown currently ranks second in the America East with a .473 field goal percentage on the season.
UMBC freshmen have now won six straight Rookie of the Week awards and eight of the last nine dating to last season. Guard Katie Brooks won for weeks two and three and guard Michelle Kurowski earned the recognition for weeks four, five and six, while forward Meghan Colabella was selected in each of the last two weeks of the 2007-08 campaign.
The last time one team has dominated the Rookie of the Week award was in 2006-07 when Vermont's Courtnay Pilypaitis, May Kotsopoulos and Sofia Iwobi took home 10 top rookie awards, including nine of 10 from Nov. 19, 2006-Jan. 22, 2007. However, the six straight for UMBC marks the most consecutive rookie honors for one school in America East history.
In addition, the six Rookie of the Weeks now surpasses the total number of rookie awards Retrievers had received in the pervious five seasons since joining the America East Conference in 2003-04. Heading into this season, UMBC freshmen had won five times.
Brown and the Retrievers return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 7, when they open America East Conference play at preseason league favorite Vermont.
