Carlee Cassidy Earns WBCA National Player of the Month Honorable Mention

UMBC junior guard Carlee Cassidy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) earned honorable mention from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) for National Player of the Month for the month of December, the organization announced Thursday.

Cassidy received the America East's nomination for the award, which was won by Oklahoma center Courtney Paris.

Cassidy averaged a league-best 23.3 points per game in seven December contests, shooting 38.8 percent from the field and 35.5 percent from three-point range with 22 triples. She added 2.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.

Cassidy posted five straight 20-point performances to start the month, including two 30-point efforts. She tallied 32 points against Navy, helping her earn America East Player of the Week on Dec. 8, then topped that with a career-high 33 against Loyola, making her just the second Retriever ever to record 30 points twice in the same month.

Cassidy currently leads the America East and ranks fifth in the NCAA with 22.1 ppg, and she ranks second in the league with 2.8 three-pointers per game. She entered January less than 100 points away from becoming the 16th Retriever ever to reach the 1,000-point plateau for her career, and she ranks third on UMBC's all-time three-pointer list with 137.

The honorable mention accolade from the WBCA is the second of Cassidy's career, as she also garnered recognition in December 2007.

En route to winning Player of the Month, Paris averaged 17.2 points, 12.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.8 blocks in five games. She shot 77.3 percent from the field, connecting on 33 of 44 field goal attempts.

Among the 28 honorable mentions selected (one from each Division I conference), two came from teams which the Retrievers faced during the month of December – Navy's Cassie Consedine and Louisiana Tech's Shanavia Dowdell.
