Women's Basketball Returns Home to Entertain America East Foe Albany Saturday Evening

The UMBC women's basketball team (10-13, 3-7 America East) returns home Saturday evening after its brief two-game road swing to host Albany (7-16, 3-7 America East) at 7 p.m. at the RAC Arena. The Retrievers have lost four in a row while the Great Danes have dropped five straight.

RETRIEVER UPDATE: After Wednesday's 68-53 loss at Stony Brook, UMBC has lost four straight games for the first time this season and is three games below .500 (10-13) for the first time since the 2004-05 season. Senior forward Sharri Rohde is the only player in the America East to rank in the top 11 in scoring, rebounding and assists, and UMBC is the only team in the conference with four players ranking in the league's top 20 in scoring, with Rohde,senior point guard Brittnie Hughes, junior forward Amanda Robinson and junior guard Kristin Drabyn all averaging double figures. The Retrievers also rank 18th in the nation in turnovers per game.

GREAT DANES UPDATE: Albany has lost five straight games and is coming off a 71-63 loss at Maine on Wednesday. The Great Danes are 7-16 on the season and 3-7 in America East action, tied with UMBC and New Hampshire for seventh place in the league standings. Amanda Ward leads the team with 11.6 ppg, ranking 11th in the America East, while Kristin Higy's team-best 6.3 rpg rank fifth in the conference.

Inside the Series: Saturday's game marks the eighth all-time meeting between UMBC and Albany, and the Great Danes hold a 5-2 advantage. The first meeting occurred on Feb. 4, 2004, a 75-58 victory for visiting Albany. The Great Danes took the first three games in the series before UMBC won, 69-53, on Feb. 19, 2005, at the RAC Arena. The Retrievers won two straight, as their 48-41 victory at home on Jan. 26, 2006, kicked off their six-game conference winning streak, but Albany has taken the last two meetings. As America East Conference rivals, the teams have met twice a year since 2004, and the Great Danes are 1-2 at the RAC Arena.

In the last meeting, Jan. 10, 2007, the Great Danes defeated the Retrievers, 70-51, at SEFCU Arena. Junior forward Amanda Robinson scored a team-high 15 points, while senior forward Sharri Rohde scored 13. Kristin Higy led Albany with 14 points, while Sherri Mikus pulled down 14 rebounds. The Great Danes shot 51.9 percent from the floor, while UMBC shot only 31.7 percent, and Albany held a 2-to-1 advantage on the glass.
