Women’s Basketball Drops Third Straight, 74-57 to Boston University

-The UMBC women's basketball team (10-12, 3-6 America East) dropped a 74-57 decision to America East rival Boston University (11-11, 3-6 America East) Sunday afternoon at Case Gymnasium. The Retrievers have now lost three straight games for the first time this season.

Senior point guard Brittnie Hughes scored a game-high 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including a 3-for-4 performance from three-point range. She was the only Retriever to score in double figures.

The Terriers scored the first seven points of the game before Hughes drilled a three-pointer to put the Retrievers on the board. Hughes scored UMBC's first eight points and 13 of the team's first 20.

Down 13-6, the Retrievers put together a 7-0 run of their own to tie the game at 13-13 on two free throws by sophomore center Mackenzie Butler with 12 minutes left in the first half.

The score remained close until the eight-minute mark, when Boston U. held a 21-20 advantage. But UMBC was held without a field goal for the next seven-and-a-half minutes, during which time the Terriers scored 13 points to take a 34-20 lead. Boston U. closed the half on a 16-2 run to go into halftime ahead 37-22.

The Terriers opened the second half on another 7-0 run and took a game-high 23-point lead, 49-26, with 14:04 to play. The Retrievers never got closer than 15 after that, the last time on a layup by Hughes with 3:16 left to make the score 65-50.

Junior forward Amanda Robinson tied a career-high and a UMBC record with six blocks in the game. She added eight points and six rebounds.

Aly Hinton led four Terriers in double figures with 18 points and added 11 rebounds for a double-double. Hinton and Hughes were named America East Players of the Game.

The Retrievers shot 38.2 percent in the game, including 40.9 percent (9-for-22) from three-point range. The Terriers shot 36.5 percent from the floor.

Boston U. out-rebounded UMBC 49-26 with 25 offensive rebounds. The Terriers also shot 91.3 percent from the free throw line (21-for-23).

The Retrievers return to action Wednesday, Feb. 7, when they head to New York to take on Stony Brook. Game time is 7 p.m.
