– The UMBC Women's Basketball program and Head Coach Phil Stern announced today the hiring of John McGuffin as Assistant Coach. McGuffin will join the Retrievers' staff with an effective start date of July 1, 2005.

"John is one of the more enthusiastic coaches in the area," said Stern. "He has a tremendous passion for the game and his insights and experience will be integral to our success."

McGuffin, who most recently coached the inaugural season at Huntingtown High School, implementing the program before his jump to the collegiate ranks, is no stranger to UMBC's RAC Arena, having directed the 2003 Patuxent High School varsity women's basketball team to the state semifinals that is held annually on the campus of UMBC. That year he was chosen by the Washington Post Southern Maryland All-Extra Edition as Coach of the Year and earned Southern Maryland Athletic Conference Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches.

Even more special about McGuffin's final season at Patuxent High School was the turn around, taking the program that produced a 7-61 record the previous three years before he started in August of 2000, to a 64-33 record, becoming Regional Champions in 2003 and advancing to the state semifinals.

McGuffin has spent the past 18-plus years teaching the game of basketball. For 13 seasons he served as the varsity boy's basketball assistant coach at Northern High School, helping guide the teams to five conference championships, five regional title games and two Maryland State semifinal appearances.

Other experience includes the Director of Operations for the AAU Southern Maryland Storm program, Director of the Calvert County Parks and Recreation Basketball Camps and a camp clinician at various local camps.

McGuffin holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Bowie State University.
