RADFORD SNAPS UMBC’S THREE-GAME WIN STREAK WITH 47-42 WIN

- The UMBC Women's Basketball team (3-2) lost to Radford (1-4), 47-42 on Tuesday night at UMBC RAC Arena as the Highlanders snapped UMBC's three-game win streak. Matea Pender (Sibenik, Croatia/The Croatian National Team) led UMBC with 15 points and eight rebounds, scoring double-digits for the fourth game in a row in the losing effort.

UMBC fell into trouble from the start as Radford went 7-of-9 to open the game and 3-of-4 from three-point range compared to UMBC's 2-for-9, 1-for-4 beginning as the Highlanders took a 17-7 lead with 12:43 left in the first half, all seven of those points for UMBC coming from Pender.

Erin Voss (Brookfield, Wis./Pius XI), who scored her first points of the season and finished with four in the game, made a nice move in the post for a lay-up to break the Retrievers' six-minute scoring drought.

Sarah Stephens converted a lay-up at the 10:17 mark to send the Highlanders lead to double-digits again at 19-9 before UMBC would end the first half with a 14-0 run, holding Radford scoreless for the final 10-plus minutes in the half and take a 23-19 lead at the break.

In the second half UMBC shot 7-of-22 from the field (31.8 percent) as Radford worked up an 11-point lead, 44-33, by the 6:05 mark, give UMBC their biggest deficit to date this season.

Following a Sharri Rohde lay-up, Pender scored UMBC's final seven points and pulled UMBC within three, 45-42, with a trey at the 1:52 mark. The Retrievers, however, turned the ball over on three of their final four possessions and Brittnie Hughes (Roanoke, Va./Northside) rimmed out a three-pointer to tie the game with 24 seconds remaining allowing the Highlanders to seal the win with two free throws by Serena White.

Leading the Highlanders was Taryn Causey with 17 points, seven assists and five steals and White with 13 points and six rebounds.

The Retrievers return to action on Thursday, Dec. 9 at Lafayette before returning home to face American on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m.
