, Md. – The UMBC Women's Basketball team (8-16, 3-12) dropped a 69-51 decision to Vermont (12-12, 8-7) in America East Women's Basketball action on Wednesday night at UMBC RAC Arena. Vermont with the win completes the two-game season sweep of UMBC.
Four players on both teams hit double digits as the game stayed close throughout the first half and opening of the second stanza. 11 lead changes including two in the final 30 seconds of the first half highlighted the opening stanza as the Catamounts controlled a 29-28 lead at the break.
UMBC, who never led in the second half, closed to within one on three different occasions in the second half, including a jumper by Matea Pender to make the game 41-40 with 8:29 left.
The Catamounts responded with an 11-0 run capped off by a Katie McNamara jumper at 4:27 as Vermont led 52-40.
UMBC climbed back to within seven at 56-49 as Heather Luttrell buried a three from the wing with 1:44 to play but the Catamounts made 10-of-10 free throws in the final two minutes to seal the win.
For UMBC Pender finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for fourth double-double of the year. Pender, who entered the game ranking second in the nation in three-point field percentage, was 2-of-10 from outside the arc. Sharri Rohde, who sat out 14 minutes in the first half with two fouls, scored 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Hughes led UMBC with 15 points and five assists and Luttrell tallied 10 points.
Lani Boardman and Tiffany Spinka each recorded double-doubles with 18 points and 10 rebounds for Boardman and 10 points and 10 rebounds for Spinka. Katie McNamara scored 16 points and Brittney Cross off the bench tallied 10.
The Retrievers were out rebounded 43-32 with 15 offensive boards for Vermont. The Catamounts shot 38.1 percent on 24-of-63 while UMBC went 36.2 percent on 17-of-47.
UMBC returns to action on Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 12 p.m. in UMBC RAC Arena. The game will be televised on Metro TV NY and Fox Sports Net.
