WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PULLS AWAY IN SECOND HALF FOR 59-46 WIN OVER NAVY

– The UMBC Women's Basketball team (3-1) extended their win streak to three-straight with a 59-46 win over the Navy Midshipmen (1-3) in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night at UMBC RAC Arena. Behind 15 points from sophomore guard Brittnie Hughes (Roanoke, Va./Northside) and a 14-1 run in the second half to break a 31-31 tie, the Retrievers move to 3-1 on the year, their best start since going 4-1 to open the 1989-90 campaign.

UMBC shot 36.0 percent in the first half as Hughes, with 11 first half points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 from outside the arc, paced the Retrievers to a 27-27 tie heading into the break.

With the score tied at 31-31 with 15:52 left in the second half, Hughes found Heather Luttrell (Kokomo, Ind./Northwestern) who drained one of her two treys, sparking a 14-1 run by the Retrievers up until the 10:15 mark. Luttrell netted her other trey during the Retriever run at the 12:06 mark, stretching UMBC's advantage to 10 as the Retrievers never led by less than double digits the rest of the game.

Hughes finished with a career-high seven assists and is averaging 6.3 assists per game on the season.

Last weeks America East Player of the Week Matea Pender (Sibenik, Croatia/The Croatian National Team) scored in double-digits for the third consecutive game with 11 on the night. Sharri Rohde (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) had a all-around strong night for the Retrievers as the sophomore forward finished with eight points, team-high seven boards, four assists and a career-high six steals.

Leading the way for the Midshipmen was Kate Hobbs who ended with 15 points and Nikki Curtis with 13 points on the night. Carly Meyer recorded a game-high eight boards as Navy finish with 24 points in the paint. The Midshipmen shot 18-of-48 from the field, 37.5 percent.

UMBC finished with 44.4 percent (20-of-45) including 55.0 percent in the second half on 11-of-20 from the field and 5-of-10 from behind the arc.

The Retrievers return to action next Tuesday night when they host Radford at 7:00 p.m. at UMBC RAC Arena.

Game Notes: UMBC broke Navy streak of three consecutive wins over the Retrievers…UMBC's 13-point win is the largest margin of victory over the Midshipmen since winning 69-53 on Feb. 9, 1991…the Retrievers 3-1 start is their best start since opening the 1989-90 campaign at 4-1…UMBC for the fourth consecutive game recorded at least 20 assists…seven of those assists were from Brittnie Hughes as she recorded a new career-high…Hughes has six assists in each of the first three games and seven in her game against Navy for a 6.3 apg average…Sharri Rohde finished with six steals as UMBC recorded 10 as a team, the third time this season they have hit double-digits in the steal column…Junior Erin Voss returned from her hand injury to log her first minutes of the season…she played six minutes with one rebound…UMBC is one win away from tying last season's total number of wins as UMBC's third win last year came on Feb. 19…in UMBC wins the Retrievers have three players, Matea Pender, Kristin Drabyn and Brittnie Hughes averaging double-digits…in those games UMBC's margin of victory is plus 17.3 ppg, with 68.3 ppg and a shooting percentage of 46.8 percent.
