WOMEN'S HOOPS FALLS AT HOME TO MONMOUTH, 71-66; HAWKS HIT EIGHT CONSECUTIVE FREE THROWS DOWN THE STRETCH

Baltimore, MD - - -The visiting Monmouth Hawks (6-5, 2-1 NEC) hit six straight free throws in the final forty five seconds to break a 65-65 tie, en-route to a 71-66, Northeast Conference victory at the UMBC RAC Arena on Saturday evening UMBC (4-7, 0-2 NEC), who have now dropped four straight contests, took their final lead of the contest at 65-63 with 1:58 remaining in the contest as freshman guard Matea Pender converted a foul line jumper. However, Monmouth sophomore center Jewonda Bright tied the game with a pair of free throws with 1:39 remaining, the seventh and final tie of the half. Hawks' senior forward Michelle Cappadona put Monmouth ahead for good at 67-65 by sinking two foul shots with forty-five seconds remaining. The Retrievers had an opportunity to tie the game but senior forward Sheila Johnson missed a driving lay-up with eighteen seconds remaining and then fouled Monmouth freshman guard Courtney Lumpkin, who converted two free throws to put the Hawks ahead 69-65. Rashawnah French hit two more free throws with seven seconds remaining to give the Hawks their final points after forward Yinka Bada made one of two from the line for UMBC. UMBC, who led 29-27 at halftime, took their biggest lead of the contest at 59-53 with 5:11 remaining as freshman guard Christine Catalanotto hit four consecutive free throws. However, Monmouth went on a 6-0 run to tie the score at 59-59 with 4:09 remaining on a pair of free throws by French. Bright (23 points) and French (22 points) combined to score 45 points for Monmouth, who outrebounded UMBC, 42-25. The Hawks also connected on 29-36 free throw attempts compared to just 13-18 for the Retrievers. Monmouth also managed to win despite committing 24 turnovers compared to 20 for UMBC. Junior forward Millette Green led UMBC with a career-high 15 points on 7-11 shooting. Junior guard Jessie Brown added 13 points and Catalanotto added 10. - - - UMBC - - -
