WOMEN'S BASKETBALL RECAP

The Retrievers (13-15) made significant progress this past season and participated in the NEC Tournament after a one-year absence. In fact, no team in the league made a better improvement as the Retrievers went from 4-14 last season to 11-7 this past season in Northeast Conference play. UMBC struggled early as they got off to a 3-8 start. However, the Retrievers went 5-3 in both January and February to finish strong. UMBC put together a three-game winning streak in both January and February. Statistically, UMBC ranked 11th in scoring offense (59.9 ppg.), but were second in defense (62.2 ppg.). Individually, guard Shalayna Johnson led the team in scoring at 12.5 ppg. and point guard Jessie Brown was right behind her at 11.4 ppg. Junior forward Sheila Johnson led the team in rebounding (6.9 rpg.) and sophomore center Liz Dickey grabbed 6.8 caroms per contest. Brown led the entire league in assists (165-6.1 pg.) and was named to the First Team All Northeast Conference squad.
