MONMOUTH HANDS WOMEN'S HOOPS SECOND CONSECUTIVE DEFEAT

Monmouth University (14-9, 9-5 NEC) defeated UMBC (10-13, 6-8 NEC) in a Northeast Conference game, 61-49, Monday night at Boylan Gym. Monmouth started the first half with an 8-0 run and would not allow UMBC to take the lead throughout the rest of the game. The Retrievers were unable to close the gap, and went into halftime down 12 points. UMBC shot below par in the first half, hitting on only 8-of-32 (25.0%) shots from the field, while Monmouth shot 41.4% (12-for-29). In the second half, Monmouth maintained a steady lead as Jewonda Bright (Norfolk, Va./Norview) worked her way up to her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. UMBC shaved the lead down to as few as two points at 48-46 with 6:45 remaining in the game. The Hawks responded with a 13-3 run in the final 6:45. Monmouth was led in scoring by Michelle Cappadona (Atlantic Highlands, N.J./Red Bank Catholic), who had 18 points and six rebounds, moving her into sixth place on the all-time Monmouth rebound chart with 690 rebounds. Rashawnah French (Newark, NJ/West Side) had 14 points and led the team with five assists. Courtney Lumpkin (Newark, N.J./West Side) managed to grab a season-high eight rebounds, along with six points, while LaSheena Martin (Sewell, N.J./Deptford) made the most of her first start of the season, as she tallied nine points and a career-high seven rebounds. The Hawks converted on 42.6% (23-54) from the field, including 28.6% (2-7) from beyond the three-point arc. UMBC was led by Jessie Brown who racked up 13 points and six rebounds. UMBC was successful on 28.4% (19-67) of their field goal attempts and 25.0% (5-20) from three-point range in the game, and posted only seven turnovers for the game.
