WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS IN NEC OPENER AT THE MOUNT

Mt. St. Mary's closed the game on a 20-5 run and defeated UMBC (1-1, 0-1 NEC), 74-65, in the NEC opener for both teams. The Retrievers led, 60-54 on a Millette Green field goal with 6 1/2 minutes to play. But the Mount's Beth Foster capped a 9-2 run at the 4:15 mark to give the Mount the lead for good and UMBC would manage just one more field goal the rest of the way. Freshman Matea Pender led the Retrievers with 16 points, while junior guard Jessie Brown tallied 15 points and added 7 assists. But post players Foster and Taylor Long amassed 42 points for the Mount, who shot 49% from the floor for the contest. UMBC grabbed a 19-11 first half lead, but the Mount rallied to go ahead, 33-29 at intermission. The Retrievers have lost 15 straight games in Emmitsburg.
