West Hartford, Conn. -- UMBC Softball freshman Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) earned an astounding five America East All-Conference Honors, including being the first player in Conference history to win both Rookie and Pitcher of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday night at its annual banquet.
In addition to being Pitcher and Rookie of the Year, Coppersmith was named All-Conference First Team Pitcher, All-Conference Second Team Utility Player and to the All-Rookie Team. Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) and Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) were also named to the All-Rookie Team.
Coppersmith led the Conference in almost all pitching categories including strikeouts (309), ERA (1.77), shutouts (11), complete games (25), opponent batting average (.154) and tied for the lead in wins with 17. At the plate, she batted .319 with a home run and 16 RBI, with team-bests in on-base percentage (.404) and walks (12).
Lonchar, a redshirt freshman after sutaining a season-ending injury 12 games into the 2018 season, was top-10 in the conference in homers with six, and sported a .287 average with a.500 slugging percentage. The catcher is second on the team in RBI with 24 and has thrown out 10 runners stealing this season.
Hawker is top-20 in the conference in several offensive categories. The freshman has a .289 average with three home runs and 23 RBI. She has 35 hits, including seven doubles and has struck out only nine times in 121 at-bats.
The Retrievers are seeded fourth in the America East Tournament and face No.5 Hartford at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
