The UMBC Softball team opens the 2019 America East Tournament on Wednesday at 11 a.m. against Hartford. The fourth-seeded Retrievers will face the fifth-seeded host Hawks.
No.4 UMBC (26-22, 7-11 AE)
For the fourth time this season, freshman pitcher Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) was named both America East Pitcher and Rookie of the Week. Overall, it was her seventh Rookie of the Week honor and sixth Pitcher of the Week award. She was also named Player of the Week once, as well.
For the week, the lefty went 1-0 with her first career save in three appearances last week. She allowed 0 ER, two hits and struck out 21 in 8 1/3 IP. At the plate, she slashed .500/.556/.750. On Saturday, she broke the school record for strikeouts in a season (293) and enters the postseason with 309.
Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) continues to lead the Retrievers in average (.340) and RBI (29). Coppersmith is batting .319 with a homer and 16 RBI. Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) is batting .301with a team-high three triples, while Kaly Winslow (Leesburg, Va.) and Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) are tied for the team lead in homers with six. Winslow is tied with Pierce in RBI at 29.
Scouting No.5 Hartford (20-29, 6-12 AE):
The Hawks and Retrievers faced off in Baltimore last weekend, with UMBC taking two of three.
Danielle Rocheleau remains one of the top hitters in the conference, carrying a .426 average with five homers and 35 RBI into the tournament. Nicolette Barranger is batting .318 with 48 hits, including 11 triples.
Julianna Kocenski leads the Hartford rotation with a 13-15 record and a 4.09 ERA. She has 82 strikeouts and 17 complete games in 179.2 innings pitched. Isabella Gerone is 3-7 with a 5.81 ERA.
