Delaware State Visits Softball for Saturday Doubleheader

The UMBC Softball team steps out of America East play to welcome Delaware State to the The Diamond at UMBC for a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m.

UMBC (19-15, 4-4 AE) suffered a pair of heartbreaking 2-1 losses at conference rival Stony Brook on Wednesday afternoon. Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) and Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) each hit a solo homer in the losses.

Pierce leads the team in average (.350), hits (36) and doubles (11). Kaly Winslow (Leesburg, Va.) leads the team in most power categories, she has  six homers, 23 RBI and .569 slugging. Leadoff hitter Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) is batting .315 with 34 hits and nine stolen bases, while Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) follows her in the lineup and is batting .292 with 33 hits and a team-best 12 stolen bases.

Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa) leads the pitching staff with a 14-7 record and 1.37 ERA, while Gillian McCarthy (Northfield, N.J.) is 5-8 with a 4.58 ERA. Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md.) has also seen some work in the circle this season, including picking up the only save of the year for the Retrievers.  

Scouting Delaware State (6-23, 3-6 MEAC):

The Hornets return to Baltimore for the second straight week after being swept at MEAC foe Morgan State last weekend. DSU has fallen in six straight overall, including a 13-3 (5) loss at First State rival Delaware on Wednesday afternoon. Jasmine Melgoza leads the team in most offensive categories, including batting average (.396), hits (36), doubles (seven), triples (three), total bases (52), runs (17), at-bats (91), slugging (.571),  on-base percentage (.404) and fewest strikeouts (three).

Brianna Baker has seen the bulk of the pitching action, throwing a team-high 97.1 innings with a 3-13 record and a 7.12 ERA. Alexis Goldsby is 2-6 with a team-best 6.75 ERA, while Tiffany Diao is 1-4 with a 7.74 ERA.
