The UMBC Softball team wraps its season-long 15 game homestand when it welcomes America East rival Maine for a three game series beginning Saturday at 1 p.m.
Freshman pitchers Gillian McCarthy (Northfield, N.J.) and Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) each shut down a high powered Norfolk State offense as the UMBC Softball team swept a doubleheader from the visiting Spartans on Wednesday afternoon.
McCarthy pitched the first seven inning shutout of her career, allowing just two hits in a 7-0 win. Coppersmith allowed just a single earned run and hit the tie-breaking grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the sixth as the Retrievers took the first game, 5-2.
UMBC moved to 17-12 (2-1 AE) with the win.
Kaly Winslow leads the team in most power categories, she has five homers, 21 RBI and .559 slugging. Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) team-bests in average (.375), hits (33) and doubles (11). Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz) has a .309 average with 30 hits and 11 stolen bases, while Julia Keffler is batting .326 with 29 hits and eight stolen bases.
In the circle, Coppersmith is 12-6 with a 1.54 ERA and 190 strikeouts. McCarthy is 5-6 with a 5.2 ERA and two complete games.
Scouting Maine (7-18, 0-3 AE):
The Black Bears, who have yet to play a home game this season, make the trek south losers of four straight, including a three game sweep to open conference play at UMass Lowell.
Laurine German leads Maine in every offensive category as she is batting .343 with three home runs and 16 RBI. She also has 23 hits, including four triples and three doubles, and sports a 1.050 OPS.
Kyleigh O'Donnell anchors the rotation with a team-best 5.05 ERA and a 1-4 record in 13 appearances (eight starts). She has struck out 36 and walked 15 in 46.1 innings. Lily Volk is 4-4 with a 6.91 ERA in 43.0 innings pitched over 13 appearances (six starts).
