Coppersmith Earns America East Pitcher of the Week Honor For Third Time; Softball Hosts Eastern Shore on Wednesday

Freshman Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) was named America East Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.

It is the lefty's sixth conference honor of the season, having been named Rookie of the Week three times as well. Coppersmith went 3-0 with a 0.67 ERA last week. She allowed just nine hits and struck out 30 batters in 21 innings pitched, including two straight complete game shutouts.

The UMBC Softball team (11-11) is off to its best start since 2015 and welcomes in-state rival Maryland Eastern Shore to The Diamond at UMBC for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.

The trio of Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio), Kaly Winslow (Leesburg, Va.) and Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville. Va.) pace the Retriever offense. Pierce leads the team in average (.379), hits (25), doubles (eight) and on-base percentage (.431). Winslow has provided the power with a team-best .578 slugging percentage with four home runs and 16 RBI, while Hawker has a homer and 14 RBI.  

Scouting Maryland Eastern Shore (4-15):

The Hawks have won three of their last four games, and are coming off a split with Howard to open MEAC play this past Sunday. Sophomore Stephanie Huff paces the Eastern Shore offense with team bests in average (.340), hits (16), RBI (nine) and tied for the lead in total bases (20). Classmate Nasya Goodman anchors the pitching staff and is 3-8 on the season with a 6.19 ERA in 13 appearances and 11 starts.
